dc.description.abstract This article presents a comprehensive literature review examining how diverse sentence patterns can enhance the quality of English essay writing among undergraduates learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Incorporating varied sentence patterns in tertiary- level writing enables students to develop linguistic maturity, boost confidence, and foster independent learning. Academic essay writing, which demands creativity, analytical reasoning, spontaneous idea generation, and structured argumentation, relies on coherence and cohesion between sentences to ensure clarity and depth. This paper explores the role of sentence patterns in strengthening undergraduate essay writing skills. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria guided the literature search, with primary sources drawn from Scopus and Google Scholar, supplemented by targeted Google searches. Using a systematic review methodology, the study analyzes nineteen peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2002 and 2024, alongside foundational theoretical works, including Bloom (1956) and Chomsky (1957), to provide conceptual grounding. Key search terms included ESL, essay writing, syntactic complexity, sentence pattern variety, and tertiary education in Sri Lanka. The findings emphasize that regular practice with diverse sentence patterns, under guided instruction, improves clarity, fluency, and overall writing quality. Prior research confirms that syntactic diversity enables learners to express abstract and complex ideas effectively, enhancing their writing maturity and academic confidence. Furthermore, the review supports using Chomsky’s Transformational Generative Grammar as a pedagogical framework for teaching sentence variety. Mastery of sentence structures not only contributes to grammatical accuracy but also supports higher-order thinking, ultimately helping students become more competent and expressive academic writers in English. en_US
