Abstract:
Employee engagement is a key factor in achieving high performance and productivity
in competitive and high-pressure environments. The objective of this review is to examine the impact of work-life balance on employee engagement based on the existing literature and reflections. It is widely acknowledged that there is a need to expand the existing body of literature on work-life balance and employee engagement. This paper reviews the relationships between work-life balance and three dimensions of employee engagement, namely cognitive involvement, emotional involvement, and behavioral involvement. To achieve the review objectives, a systematic review of the literature was conducted by using an archival method. This review process has used more than 40 research papers that are relevant to the reviewed concepts. Findings of the review suggest that there is a positive relationship between work-life balance and cognitive involvement of employees. Similarly, there is a positive relationship between work-life balance and the emotional involvement of employees. Further, the study suggested there is a positive relationship between the behavioral involvement of employees. Finally, this review proposes a conceptual model that is useful to test and understand the relationships among the reviewed concepts.
